SSA estimate comparison

Social Security claiming-age cumulative benefit comparison

Compare cumulative nominal benefits from two monthly Social Security estimates you enter from SSA at different claiming ages.

Compare two monthly benefit estimates that you obtained directly from SSA for different starting ages. This tool does not estimate your Social Security benefit or recommend when to claim.

Enter two SSA monthly estimates and the ages they apply to.

Use estimates from the same SSA record and consistent future-earnings assumptions. Benefit estimates are entered by you; this page does not send them anywhere.

How the comparison works

For each scenario, the model multiplies the monthly estimate you enter by the number of modeled benefit months from that claiming age through the selected comparison age. It reports cumulative nominal dollars and the first modeled age at which the later-start scenario catches or exceeds the earlier-start scenario, if that happens within age 100.

The monthly estimate is held constant. This simplified comparison excludes cost-of-living adjustments, taxes, investment returns or discounting, work and earnings changes, Medicare costs, spouse or survivor benefits, and payment timing. A crossover age is arithmetic under these inputs; it is not a break-even recommendation or a prediction of how long anyone will live.

Get both estimates from SSA

Use your my Social Security account or an SSA retirement calculator to compare estimates at different starting ages. Check your earnings record and keep future-work assumptions consistent between scenarios. SSA explains that retirement benefits may start as early as 62, delayed retirement credits raise benefits after full retirement age, and those credits stop at 70. The effect depends on your birth year and claiming month, so use SSA's estimates rather than applying a generic percentage here. Source checked November 3, 2026.

How it works

Enter two monthly benefit estimates from SSA and the claiming ages they apply to, then choose a comparison age. The tool holds each monthly estimate constant and compares modeled cumulative nominal benefits.

Good to know

Does this calculator estimate my Social Security benefit?

No. Enter monthly estimates obtained directly from SSA for each claiming age. This page does not access earnings records, calculate benefit amounts, or provide a claiming recommendation.

What does the crossover age mean?

It is the first modeled month when the cumulative total from the later-start scenario equals or exceeds the earlier-start scenario, using the monthly amounts entered and no cost-of-living adjustments or discounting. It does not account for life expectancy or predict which choice is better.

Where should I get the monthly estimates?

Use your my Social Security account or an SSA retirement calculator. Keep earnings assumptions consistent, review your earnings record, and use estimates for the specific claiming ages entered.

Does it include COLAs, taxes, or spouse benefits?

No. Monthly estimates stay fixed. Taxes, cost-of-living adjustments, work changes, time value of money, Medicare, spouse or survivor benefits, and payment timing are outside this simplified comparison.
