Emergency savings scenario
Emergency fund target scenario calculator
Estimate an emergency savings target from expenses and months you choose, then model a monthly contribution on your timeline.
Set a target from your own monthly expenses and the number of months you want to cover. There is no single emergency-fund amount that fits everyone; this scenario excludes interest and uses only the expenses you enter.
Enter your expenses, target, current savings, and timeline to see the scenario.
How this scenario works
Target amount = monthly expenses you enter × target months. Savings gap = the greater of zero and target amount − current emergency savings. Monthly amount = savings gap ÷ months you choose to build it. The result assumes equal deposits at month-end and no interest, withdrawals, fees, or changes in expenses.
The CFPB describes an emergency fund as money set aside for unplanned expenses, and says the amount needed depends on a person’s situation. It suggests thinking about past unexpected expenses when setting a goal. This calculator therefore does not prescribe a standard number of months or decide which expenses belong in your plan. Choose expenses that make sense for your scenario; your priorities, income stability, available support, and other obligations may affect the target you choose. A target is a planning aid, not a guarantee or personalized financial recommendation. For practical saving strategies, including consistent contributions and monitoring cash flow, see the CFPB guide.
Turn a savings goal into a monthly plan
If you have a specific dollar goal and want to include a user-entered interest assumption, use the savings goal monthly contribution calculator. It uses a different model with monthly compounding and end-of-month deposits.
If comparing a one-time debt payment with retaining cash in savings, use the pay debt or save scenario calculator. It does not set an emergency fund target or recommend a choice.
How it works
Enter monthly expenses for your scenario, the number of months you want to cover, current emergency savings, and the time you want to use to build the target. The model excludes interest and assumes equal month-end contributions.
Good to know
How many months of expenses should I save?
There is no universal target in this calculator. Choose the number of months that fits your circumstances; the CFPB says the amount needed depends on your situation and suggests considering past unexpected expenses.
Does this include interest?
No. It divides the remaining target gap by the number of months you enter and excludes interest, withdrawals, fees, and changing expenses.
What counts as monthly expenses?
You decide which expenses to include. The calculator does not classify bills or recommend an amount based on your income or circumstances.
