College cost guide

Find an official college net price calculator

Find school-specific net price calculators through the U.S. Department of Education and compare estimates with official financial aid offers.

Where can I find a college net price calculator?

Start with the U.S. Department of Education’s Net Price Calculator Center. Search for a school and follow its calculator link. The Center says its links come from calculator addresses collected through the IPEDS Institutional Characteristics component. If you already know the college, check its official financial aid or cost page as well. Reviewed November 3, 2026.

Should I enter each school separately?

Yes. A net price calculator is specific to an institution and uses information about you to estimate what students like you paid at that school in the previous year after grants and scholarships. Complete a separate calculator for every school you are considering, using the same household and enrollment assumptions where the questions allow, and save each result with its date and inputs. The calculators do not provide a single standardized cross-school quote.

What does net price include?

The Department of Education describes net price as the amount to attend an institution for one academic year after subtracting grants and scholarships. Federal Student Aid also describes a broader comparison as total school cost, including anticipated additional costs, minus grants and scholarships. Check what each calculator includes; travel, personal expenses, books, or other costs may need a separate estimate. Loans and work-study are not grants or scholarships and should not be treated as free aid.

Can I rely on the estimate as my actual bill or aid award?

No. It is an estimate based on prior-year information and entered details. Compare it with the school’s financial aid offer, which Federal Student Aid identifies as the best source for the exact aid amounts offered to you. Review grants and scholarships separately from work-study and loans, and ask the school’s financial aid office about missing costs or changed circumstances.

What other federal tool can help compare schools?

Federal Student Aid links to College Scorecard for school information, including average annual cost and outcomes. Use it as additional context, not as a replacement for a school-specific net price estimate or your actual aid offer. For a separate planning scenario using your own future cost, contribution, and return assumptions, see the 529 college savings planner; it does not forecast tuition or investment results.
